“It’s so interesting. We see it in the free newspapers. It’s the idea that the more we put information together, the more it gets turned into figures.
We are moving from a society dependant on words to a society dependant on figures. Where it becomes worrying is when we realise that figures are much less malleable than words. With figures “we can’t do what we want with them”. They always need to be put into a context, their complexity understood, but comparable at the same time. As contradictory as it may seem as a figure is such a precise element, I find resorting to figures a way of saying nothing at all. It’s this unclear line that intrigues me. The one between what flows well and what is precise. The flow of figures and the difficulty to read them.”

A series of portraits, of whom are all artists, investigating the image the individuals has of himself; what we actually see and the one he actually wants us to see.

Unlike classic portraits which « take » images and simply display them, the Portrait Statistique associates the photographic image with a self portrait of statistical information provided by the subject.

The Portrait Statistique was born in November 2006 during “Photo Month in Paris”. It is made up of two first series: “Insertion my Love” and “Expansion”.

PORTRAIT D’ARTISTE # 2 - St-Cloud  Arts Center- 2007
While the first series concentrates on the similarities and the differences between same generation artists, the second series focuses on contemporary artists of all ages and backgrounds. Each one of these portraits can be perceived as an open window over one of the microcosms that contribute to the richness of modern and contemporary art.

“100 % for giving food to all those who are starving, but also 100% for putting Gauguin on their plates and pouring Rimbaud in their glass.

100% for the mixing of cultures, for world peace, for no racism, no xenophobia, no intolerance and all form of fundamentalism.”

Visibility and Anonymity; Urban Ambivalence....

In 2007, Le M.U.R association ( Modulables. Urbains. Réactif ) started a public poll to estimate perception of its action within the 11th Paris district.
From that study was born the idea of a collaboration with the Statistical Portrait. The fruit of this collaboration is entitled: Le Portrait Statistique fait le MUR
The idea was to associate, in the same set, two kind of subjects - the urban artists and their public (2 x 25 portraits) - and to paste all of it on the 8x3 metre pannel on Oberkampf Street.
